What Causes a Screw Air Compressor to Trip on High Temperature?

A screw air compressor high temperature trip is a production stop that can also shorten the airend life. The controller shuts down the machine before oil breakdown, carbon deposits, or bearing failure gets worse. The cost is usually higher than the repair: unplanned downtime, rushed maintenance, and potential damage to the airend.

When discharge temperature passes the controller setpoint, commonly 95–110°C on oil-injected rotary screw units, the machine trips. A repeated trip is a warning, not a random event. Trace the heat source before restarting the compressor.

Why a screw air compressor high temperature trip happens

Most high temperature trips come from one of six issues in the cooling, oil, or airflow path:

  • Blocked oil cooler. Dust, oil film, and plant debris reduce heat transfer. Clean the cooler fins with compressed air from the clean side and check both air and water paths on water-cooled units.
  • Low oil level or wrong oil. Insufficient oil cannot carry enough heat away from the airend. Use the recommended rotary screw compressor oil and keep the level within the sight-glass range.
  • Clogged oil filter or separator. High pressure drop forces the bypass or starves the airend of cooling oil. Change filters at the maintenance interval instead of waiting for an alarm.
  • Restricted inlet or dirty air filter. Low inlet airflow reduces compressed air output and forces the cooling system to work harder.
  • Poor ventilation or high ambient temperature. The compressor needs cool, clean inlet air and enough room for discharge heat to leave. A hot enclosure raises the operating temperature.
  • Faulty sensor, thermostat, or fan motor. A false reading or a failed cooling fan can trigger a high temperature trip even when the machine is mechanically sound.

For a quick check, open the controller alarm history, record the trip temperature, inspect the oil level and cooler, and confirm the cooling fan starts. If the trip returns after cleaning and filter replacement, stop resetting it and check the airend and thermal valve.

Look at when the fault occurs. A trip at 2:00 p.m. on a hot day usually points to high ambient temperature, ventilation, or a partially blocked cooler. A trip that appears immediately after an oil or filter service often points to the wrong oil grade, an air-locked cooler, or a loose connection on the thermal sensor.
