How to Compare Screw Air Compressor Quotations Like a Pro

A screw air compressor quotation comparison that stops at the machine price is the most expensive way to buy. Buyers spend hours negotiating a discount and miss the number that actually drives cost: specific power. In one Panrui retrofit calculation, the existing system consumed 7.47 kW per cubic meter of air, while the replacement proposal ran at 5.7 kW. That one difference changed the ten-year energy bill by a far larger margin than the invoice price.

Compare Specific Power, Not the Price Tag

Specific power is the kW input needed to deliver one cubic meter of air per minute at the quoted pressure. Two machines can both carry a 132 kW label, but one may deliver 27.8 m³/min while another delivers 24 m³/min. The 132 kW number means very different things in each case. That 1.77 kW/m³/min gap in the earlier example may look small on paper, but it multiplies across every operating hour. Ask every supplier to state specific power at your duty point, not at a favorable test point. For a refresher on matching flow and pressure to the plant, start with the rotary screw air compressor guide.

Rebuild the 10-Year Energy Cost

A quotation becomes useful only after it is converted into kWh. In one Panrui training case, a 250 kW machine rated at 8.6 bar was actually operated at 4.9 bar and produced 34.7 m³/min. Its measured consumption was 207.67 kW. The proposed 160 kW replacement delivered 42.5 m³/min at 5 bar and consumed 154.43 kW at the same demand. That is a saving of 53.24 kW every hour.

At 24 hours a day, the plant saved 1,277.76 kWh per day. At an industrial tariff of 0.8 CNY per kWh, that is 1,022.21 CNY per day, or 3,731,059.2 CNY over ten years. The equipment price was a rounding error by comparison.

Normalize the Duty Point Before You Rank Bids

Quotes rarely describe the same operating condition. One supplier may quote at 7 bar, another at 8 bar, and a third at a lower ambient temperature. Pressure is expensive: in the case above, the old machine ran at 8.6 bar while the process only needed 4.9 bar. That 3.7-bar overshoot added roughly 26% to its power demand. If a supplier will not confirm the same pressure, flow, ambient temperature, and duty cycle, its price is not comparable.

Check the Total Cost of Ownership Line Items

  • Motor and air end: a first-class air end and a Class 1-efficiency permanent-magnet motor lower long-run kW input.
  • VSD control: a variable-speed screw air compressor reduces unload waste and starts soft, cutting inrush current.
  • Energy margin: Panrui comparison data shows a two-stage unit can save 5%–10% more than another energy-saving machine of the same power. In a 2 × 132 kW case, that difference was 15.84 kW per hour, or about 1.16 million CNY over ten years.
  • Spare parts and service: confirm filter and oil-change costs, response time, and warranty terms in writing before comparing quotes.

What Buyers Get Wrong

  • They accept the lowest first price without calculating specific power.
  • They compare a 7-bar quotation with an 8-bar quotation as if they were equal.
  • They ignore the air-end and motor brands, then accept high maintenance risk later. A cheap air end with a premium sticker can erase the savings within the first service year.

Next Step

Before you sign, require each supplier to provide a like-for-like load-profile calculation instead of a brochure number. Compare kW per m³/min first, then ten-year kWh and total cost of ownership. Send your required pressure, flow, and operating hours so every screw air compressor quotation comparison uses the same baseline. Contact us with those conditions and we will prepare a duty-point comparison.
