A 37 kW Panrui two-stage permanent-magnet VSD screw compressor can cut five-year electricity cost from about RMB 1,296,000 to RMB 1,056,600 in the manufacturer’s comparison—a 21% saving at 0.8 MPa and 6 m³/min average demand. One wrong screw compressor import Incoterms choice can erase that saving before the machine is installed.
Why the Incoterm Decides Your Real Landed Cost
FOB, CIF, and DDP are not just shipping acronyms. They define who pays freight, insurance, export handling, import clearance, duties, and final trucking, and where the risk passes from seller to buyer.
For a screw compressor, the quoted unit price is only one part of the landed cost. The full calculation also includes destination port charges, customs brokerage, import duty, VAT, and delivery to the plant. Compare the complete number, not the first figure on the quotation.
One practical way to compare offers is to put them on the same delivery basis: FOB price + ocean freight + insurance + destination handling + duty + inland trucking. If a supplier cannot show those items, the quotation is not yet comparable.
FOB: The Lowest Quote, and the Most Logistics Work
Under FOB, the seller clears export formalities and loads the compressor onto the vessel at the origin port. After loading, the risk passes to the buyer, who then arranges main carriage and insurance.
FOB gives you control of the freight forwarder, but it also gives you the work. A 37 kW unit packed at 146×100×129 cm still needs export packaging, ocean freight, destination handling, and import clearance before commissioning. If the ship is delayed or the destination port adds storage charges, those costs are yours.
CIF: Simpler, but Risk Does Not Follow the Paperwork
CIF adds cost, insurance, and freight to the destination port, all paid by the seller. It feels simpler because the supplier handles the main voyage and provides marine insurance.
Under Incoterms 2020, the buyer still takes the main carriage risk once the machine is loaded at origin, and still handles import clearance, duties, and inland delivery. CIF is a workable middle option, but it is not a door-delivered price.
Before accepting CIF, check the insured value and the destination port named in the contract. A port 300 km from your plant can leave a large inland freight bill outside the quote.
DDP: The Price Closest to Your Factory Floor
DDP makes the seller responsible for delivering the compressor to the named place, including import duties and taxes. For a screw compressor buyer, this is the most complete quotation and the easiest one to compare across suppliers.
The visible unit price is usually higher because duty, brokerage, inland freight, and seller risk are included. That is why export compliance matters: Panrui documents CE export certification and ships to markets including Southeast Asia, Europe, and Australia, so compliance can be confirmed before you choose the term.
How to Choose the Right Term for a Screw Compressor Import
- Compare landed cost, not FOB unit price.
- Ask for HS code, packed dimensions, and gross weight before booking freight.
- For DDP, confirm in writing that import duty and VAT are included.
- Put the exact delivery address and unloading point in the order.
- Confirm the supplier has run the factory test and can provide the test record before loading.
Once the freight term is fixed, confirm the machine itself is the right size. A variable speed screw air compressor sized to real demand can run closer to actual airflow and reduce wasted energy, while the correct rotary screw air compressor selection prevents paying for capacity you do not need.
What Buyers Get Wrong
- Assuming CIF includes all import charges. It does not include destination customs, duty, or inland delivery.
- Choosing FOB without checking destination port handling and storage fees.
- Comparing an FOB quotation directly against a DDP quotation and assuming the lower number is cheaper.
Get a Landed-Cost Quote Before You Compare
A reliable screw compressor quotation should show the full landed cost and delivery point, not only the FOB unit price. Contact Panrui for a CIF or DDP quotation with packed dimensions, lead time, and confirmation of what is included.
Request a landed-cost quotation and compare it against your current compressor’s energy cost before you sign.
