Why Voltage and Frequency Must Match Before You Order
A single electrical mismatch can turn a $30,000 imported compressor into a machine that sits on the warehouse floor. If the motor is wired for 380V/50Hz and your site supplies 460V/60Hz, the unit may trip on startup, overheat, or void the motor warranty. Get screw compressor voltage frequency selection right before you pay the deposit.
The issue is not just the plug. Voltage affects winding insulation and current draw, while frequency controls motor speed. On a fixed-speed rotary screw compressor, a 50Hz motor run on 60Hz supply rotates about 20% faster, which can push the airend and fan beyond their safe duty point. A 60Hz motor run on 50Hz supply rotates about 17% slower, reducing air delivery and often weakening cooling.

Check These Five Electrical Details Before Confirming the Order
- Motor rated voltage and tolerance. Ask for the nameplate, not a catalog photo. Confirm the exact voltage range, phase, and insulation class.
- Rated frequency. 50Hz and 60Hz are not a small adjustment. Verify the motor, fan, and controller are rated for your grid.

- Control transformer voltage. The main motor may be correct while the control circuit is wired for a different voltage. Ask for the transformer tap and wiring diagram.
- Motor terminal arrangement. Star or delta connection must match the supply voltage. Request the connection diagram and a factory video showing the terminal block before shipment.
If your site is 60Hz and the quotation still says 50Hz, require a 60Hz motor and fan package. A transformer-only fix changes voltage but leaves the motor speed, cooling, and VSD input frequency unaddressed.

What Buyers Get Wrong
- Mistake: “A transformer fixes everything.” A transformer changes voltage, not frequency. It can help with voltage, but the motor speed and VSD logic must still be correct for the local grid.
- Mistake: “The seller said it is multi-voltage.” Ask for the actual motor nameplate, drive manual, and test certificate. Multi-voltage can mean different motor taps, not universal compatibility.
- Mistake: “I only need the plug to fit.” Industrial compressors are not consumer appliances. Site voltage, phase, frequency, protection, and earthing must be specified together.
