The Hidden Risk: A Stopped Compressor Is Not a Safe Compressor

Screw compressor maintenance safety starts with one uncomfortable fact: a machine that looks stopped can restart automatically. The control system may respond to a pressure drop, a timer, or a remote signal while a technician is still working inside the enclosure.

6 Lockout Checks Before You Open Any Panel

Run the same sequence every time, even for a five-minute inspection. A consistent routine is what prevents the control system from catching a technician off guard.

  • Disconnect the main power. Open the isolator or breaker and attach a lock or tag at the switch.
  • Close the compressed air isolation valve. This blocks air from flowing back from the plant header.
  • Open the manual vent valve. Release stored pressure and leave the vent open while you work.

  • Shut off cooling water on water-cooled units. Close the supply and release pressure from the water line.

Electrical lockout alone is not enough. A compressed air system stores energy in the separator tank, piping, and receiver. If the vent valve is not opened, that energy can eject a plug, nut, or fitting the moment it is loosened.

Before loosening any connection, check both the package gauge and the plant-side gauge. Open the drain or vent, wait for the pressure reading to fall to zero, and leave the vent open. A closed vent can trap a residual pocket of air that surprises you later.

Water-cooled machines carry a second stored energy source: cooling water. Close the water supply and release the water-line pressure before disconnecting any cooler or piping joint. Skipping this step can cause a sudden release of hot water and scalding.

What You Must Never Do During Service

  • Do not remove nuts, oil fill plugs, or other parts while the compressor is running or pressurized.
  • Do not use gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable solvents to clean air filters or components. Use a non-flammable cleaner and follow the service manual.
  • Do not assume the control system will stay off. Automatic start is a normal function, not a fault.
  • Do not leave oil or water on the floor. Clean spills before starting work to prevent slips and falls.
