Screw Compressor Specific Power: The One Number That Predicts Your Electricity Bill

One 37 kW screw air compressor can quietly burn 259,200 kWh per year before a single service invoice arrives. The same load served by a unit with better screw compressor specific power drops to 211,320 kWh—a 47,880 kWh annual gap. That difference is why the kW/(m³/min) number on a data sheet matters more than the motor nameplate.

What Screw Compressor Specific Power Actually Means

Specific power is the package input power divided by the free air delivered at a stated pressure, usually expressed as kW/(m³/min). A lower number means the compressor produces the same compressed air with less electricity. It captures motor efficiency, airend design, drive losses, filter restriction, and internal pressure drop together, so it is a better purchase filter than quoted horsepower.

Compare the number only at the same discharge pressure and free air delivery. A 5.9 kW/(m³/min) rating at 0.7 MPa is not equal to a 6.2 kW/(m³/min) rating at 1.0 MPa, because every extra bar costs power.

The Cost Gap Hidden Inside a 37 kW Quote

Take a two-stage screw compressor rated at 5.87 kW/(m³/min) with 7.5 m³/min free air delivery. A common Grade 1 single-stage 37 kW unit may carry 7.2 kW/(m³/min) with 6.3 m³/min delivery.

For a plant averaging 6.0 m³/min demand over 6,000 hours a year, the calculation is specific power × average flow × operating hours:

  • Two-stage: 5.87 × 6.0 × 6,000 = 211,320 kWh/year
  • Single-stage: 7.2 × 6.0 × 6,000 = 259,200 kWh/year
  • Saved: 47,880 kWh/year before you change a single production process

Multiply that saved energy by your tariff. At USD 0.10/kWh the gap is about USD 4,788 per year; at USD 0.15/kWh it is USD 7,182 per year. The higher your local power price, the faster the more efficient machine pays for itself.

Pressure and Filters Also Move the Number

Specific power is not fixed after installation. A system restriction that adds 0.1 MPa (1 bar) of pressure drop can raise compressor power by about 6.5%. Clogged inlet filters, undersized piping, or a discharge setpoint above your actual process requirement can erase the efficiency you paid for.

Before blaming the compressor, measure the pressure at the machine outlet and at the point of use. If the gap is more than 0.5 bar, fix the piping or filtration first. For the machine itself, request a rotary screw air compressor with a clean filter differential-pressure target and a setpoint matched to your process.

Five-Point Quotation Check

  • Ask for kW/(m³/min) at the same bar and free air delivery for every bid.
  • Request flow at 0.7, 0.8, and 1.0 MPa, not one headline number.
  • Confirm whether motor efficiency, airend, fan, and inverter losses are included in the package rating.
  • Estimate 5-year energy cost using your tariff and annual operating hours.
  • Compare pressure-drop and filter data, not only the compressor price.

What Buyers Get Wrong

“All 37 kW compressors use the same electricity” is false. The 5.87 vs 7.2 kW/(m³/min) comparison above produces an 18.5% annual energy saving at the same demand. Nameplate kW only tells you the motor size; it does not tell you how much air you get for each kilowatt.

“Specific power is just a lab number” is also false when quotes are compared at identical pressure and flow. It is the fastest way to separate a well-engineered package from a cheap motor on a standard airend.

Turn the Number Into a Decision

Start with your average flow, required pressure, annual hours, and tariff. Multiply specific power by flow by hours for each quote. Then add purchase price, maintenance, and downtime risk. The lowest purchase price often loses when the energy bill is included.
